Shape & Size of Your Dining Room Table
The size and shape of your dining room and your normal daily dining requirements
are key ingredients to consider when choosing your dining table.
If your room is rectangular in shape, then a rectangular or oval table will
look best.
If the room is basically square, then either round or square will function
and look best.
Remember, if you use a china, buffet, or serving cabinet in the room, you
must now reconsider the shape of the room just as if the wall started at the
front of the cabinet.
The next rule of thumb will save you time, money and exasperation. You need
to figure about 26 to 30 inches (depending upon the overall depth of the dining
chair) on all sides of the table, for you, as well as your guest, to easily back
away from the table and not be concerned with bumping into a wall or other piece
of furniture.
This figure should be increased by an additional 15 inches if you are the
type of host that frequently is getting up to move around the table to either
serve or remove dishes.
Remember to consider whether or not you need to expand the table for those
special occasions that require more seating.
For every two additional people you will need approximately 24 inches of table
extension and therefore, overall space requirements in the room.
We all want our dining room to look and function at its best and these guidelines
will help you make the right choices.
